Australia’s list of historic places, natural areas and
places of importance to indigenous people is called the Register of the National
Estate. About 11 500 places are registered. The list is now on the Internet with
access designed for two groups of users: the general user and the specialist.
The database for general users describes each place and gives information about
its condition. More than 8900 photographs of 7000 places are available, with a
further 1600 photos to be added by June. The database for the specialist
requires the user to complete an application form and download the required
program onto their computer. Detailed information, but no access to photographs,
is available to the specialist user. The address for both databases is
http://www.erin.gov.au/ahc.html.
