GRANVILLE WOODS solved the problem of current collection on early electric tramcars with a grooved wheel at the end of a pole, known as a “troller”, whence trolley car. Woods, an American inventor of mixed Australian Aborigine, Malay Indian and African descent, was often refused work because of racial prejudice, but eventually built up strong connections with General Electric, Westinghouse and other companies.
