People in Britain will soon be able to chat on their phone as they explore
the Internet. On 15 September, BT launches a system that converts an analogue
phone line into two digital and two analogue lines. Your computer connects to
the Net via an ISDN card or “terminal adapter” rather than a modem. At 64 or 128
kilobits per second, ISDN is faster than normal modems. The conversion costs
拢116, and the line rental for the service, called Highway, is 拢40
per month. This includes 拢15 worth of free calls.
