The Nintendo Game Boy can be converted into a sonar device for anglers using
a clever add-on from the Japanese firm Bandai, the maker of Tamagotchi virtual
pets. Designed for Bandai by Honda Electronics, the device uses a floating
16-centimetre-long cylindrical echo sounder that feeds into a decoder plugged
into the Game Boy’s cartridge port. Images of shoals of fish up to 20 metres
below the surface are displayed on the Game Boy’s LCD screen. Bandai says the
拢62 sonar add-on costs about one-third the price of comparable dedicated
devices.
