Virtual chalk

By Barry Fox

15 August 1998

Telecoms company Mitel of Ontario is developing a blackboard that works like
a computer touch screen (GB 2 315 859). A video camera feeds images of the board
to a computer, which identifies the lecturer’s hand and works out its position.
These coordinates are used to move a cursor on a computer screen and control
that computer鈥 just like using a mouse to move a pointer on a screen.

If the “virtual blackboard” also acts as a screen for an image projected by a
computer, the lecturer can work through a menu of options by tapping the board,
as if clicking a mouse button.
