FOLLOWING a one-day strike by unions (see above), Neil Chalmers, the
director of the Natural History Museum, was this week scheduled to go to
Eastbourne for crisis talks with Bill Brett, general secretary of the Institution
of Professionals, Managers and Specialists. The union is having its annual
conference in the seaside town. Last week 300 specialist staff took part
in the strike, to protest at the 100 job cuts in the corporate plan. Most
of the staff affected are scientists. The museum management has agreed
to delay sending the plan to the government’s Office of Arts and Libraries
to allow time for negotiations.
