
Feedbacks that cause ecosystems to emit more carbon will make the climate crisis more severe than expected, amplifying global warming by 20 to 30 per cent this century.
It isn鈥檛 just fossil fuel emissions that raise temperatures. Warming itself creates more warming. For instance, a hotter atmosphere absorbs more water vapour, which traps more heat in the atmosphere, which then holds more water vapour.
Climate models already incorporate most global feedback loops like this one, and they have started to include feedbacks that are disrupting carbon storage in particular ecosystems. But no single model includes all ecosystem feedbacks. Now, a study has shown that these natural feedbacks will heat the planet by an extra 0.2掳C to 0.4掳C by 2100, on top of at least 1掳C to 2掳C of global warming already between now and then.

鈥淭hat suggests we鈥檙e going to go further over 1.5掳C global warming than we thought, with all the extra risks that brings,鈥 says at the University of Exeter in the UK, who wasn鈥檛 involved in the new research.
at Woodwell Climate Research Center in Massachusetts and her colleagues estimated the emissions from four major natural feedbacks. The first is mainly in the Arctic, in permafrost that once remained frozen year-round. As this ground thaws, microbes begin to decompose plant and animal remains that have been frozen for millennia, emitting carbon dioxide and methane.
A second feedback involves wetlands, which also release more methane as temperatures rise. This is because warmer water can hold less gas, and because microbes in the water decompose organic matter at a higher rate. The same processes lead to additional methane emissions from ponds and lakes, a third feedback.
The fourth feedback kicks in as the air gets hotter, winters get shorter and soils get drier. All of this increases the frequency and intensity of wildfires, which results in greater CO2 and methane emissions.
鈥淲e need to fully account for all sources of emissions that contribute to warming, otherwise we plan for the wrong future,鈥 says Sch盲del. 鈥淭hese emissions are left out of carbon budgets, and we adapt to the wrong targets.鈥
Much of this extra warming is already unavoidable, the modelling suggests. In a climate scenario in which human emissions after 2050, the natural feedbacks add an average of 0.4掳C of warming by 2100.
But even in a scenario in which emissions start declining today, the feedbacks add 0.2掳C of extra warming this century, prolonging global warming.
鈥淭his additional warming keeps rising through 2100鈥 because there is a lag between when emissions occur and when the temperature impacts occur,鈥 says Sch盲del.
Rather than instilling hopelessness, this should inspire governments to redouble their efforts to cut emissions, she adds. Currently, fossil fuel emissions are still increasing each year.
Earth has already heated up by almost 1.4掳C compared with the pre-industrial era, and August was the joint hottest month ever observed. Unprecedented heatwaves killed at least 35,000 people in Europe and contributed to record wildfires near Bordeaux in France and Madrid in Spain. In Nepal and Tibet, a glacier collapse and flood killed more than 1300 people.

The UN last week that humanity would fail to meet the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5掳C. Now, it said, the world must focus on limiting this period of 鈥渙vershoot鈥 through carbon dioxide removal, which includes massive tree planting initiatives as well as the use of machines that filter CO2 from the air and interventions to boost carbon uptake by the ocean. But these approaches still face questions about their cost and environmental impacts.
The new findings mean governments will need to invest even more in measures like flood barriers, drought-resistant crops and early-warning systems for climate tipping points, says Lenton.
鈥淭he overshoot of 1.5掳C may go higher than we hoped, and therefore we鈥檒l need more adaptation action to cope with the consequences of that,鈥 he says.
