WHILE eyes are on the G20 summit in London, this week鈥檚 serious business on climate change is being done in Germany.
The latest round of UN-backed talks aiming at a replacement for the Kyoto protocol began in Bonn on Monday. Delegates heard the chief US climate negotiator, Todd Stern, declare his country鈥檚 re-engagement. 鈥淲e do not doubt the science, we do not doubt the urgency, and we do not doubt the enormity of the challenge before us,鈥� Stern said. 鈥淭he facts on the ground are outstripping the worst-case scenarios. The costs of inaction 鈥� or inadequate actions 鈥� are unacceptable.鈥�
Climate change talks between the G20 leaders are not expected to produce more than a bland statement 鈥� perhaps a pledge to create 鈥済reen jobs鈥� as part of a package to stimulate the global economy.
