A night light in the form of a rug that lights up underfoot as you walk along it has been developed at London South Bank University in the UK. When you step on 鈥淔ootLume鈥, pressure pads switch on electroluminescent panels beneath the fabric 鈥 giving the rug a soft glow that shuts off after 5 minutes. Co-inventor Zo毛 Robson says the next development is to make FootLume respond to music.
The smell of horseradish could soon be more than a sign of an imminent roast dinner. A smoke alarm developed at Shiga University of Medical Science Hospital in Japan exploits the fact that the pungent aroma of horseradish wakes people from the deepest sleep 鈥 especially if they are hearing impaired. The device, which will spray a horseradish extract, could be launched within two years.
