Speed cameras hidden in road humps can cut the deaths caused by speeding
motorists. The humps slow up motorists and the cameras catch those that don鈥檛.
Graham Assinder of Roke Manor Research, part of the Siemens group, has invented
a road hump that contains a digital camera, a row of powerful LEDs and a battery
that can be recharged by solar power (GB 2357363). If the speed sensors detect a
driver exceeding the speed limit as they hit the hump, the LEDs produce a flash
of light and the camera takes a snap of the number plate. A radio transmitter
then sends the picture back to base.
