Creating a plasma in the exhaust gases of diesel cars can cut the amount of
pollution they produce, according to AEA Technology of Harwell, Oxfordshire (GB
2346528). A transformer connected to the car鈥檚 electrical system sends
high-voltage pulses to two electrodes in the exhaust pipe to generate sparks.
The resulting plasma breaks down any oxides of carbon and nitrogen in the
exhaust gases as they pass through. All the electrics are enclosed in a metal
case, which prevents mechanics from getting electric shocks and stops
electromagnetic radiation from interfering with the car鈥檚 stereo system.
