Truck and bus drivers often fail to wear seat belts—and airbags won’t
always protect them, says Swedish vehicle safety firm Autoliv. The company has
developed a safety net that stops drivers being thrown from their vehicles (WO
01/02220). The net is folded inside a strip mount running around the top of the
vehicles’ large front windscreen and side windows. Strong pull-cords run over
guide rollers and down the sides of the window to a powerful motor-driven
pulley. In an emergency stop, the motor spins the pulley so fast it pulls the
net down taut over the windshields in an instant.
