Bulky projection TVs are about to get a lot thinner, thanks to a new
technology from RCA. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week,
RCA previewed a back-projection TV that鈥檚 half the thickness of today鈥檚 sets.
Instead of a bunch of cathode ray tubes lit by red, green and blue bulbs, the
heart of the projector is a 鈥渓ight engine鈥 made from three LCDs glued to the
faces of a glass prism. The prism splits white light into red, green and blue
beams that reflect off the LCDs, through a projection lens and onto the back of
the translucent screen, giving 1280 脳 780 pixel resolution.
