Electronic stills cameras suffer from a major disadvantage: their costly
microchip memory cards fill up too quickly. Storing pictures on floppy disc
doesn’t help, because the disc drive is bulky and drains the batteries. Sony’s
answer (WO 00/48384) is to build a modem and phone socket into the camera. When
the memory is full, you plug the camera into a phone line or cellphone and
e-mail the pictures to your account. The memory is then emptied, ready for more
pictures. The e-mailed images can simply be downloaded onto a PC.
