Cricket umpires need no longer face an irate crowd or players over borderline
run-out decisions. Intelligent Sports Technology of Lancashire has come to their
rescue with its new stumps (GB 2 341 555), which have electrical contacts that
break a connection the instant they are struck by a ball. This triggers a pair
of cameras mounted at the boundary of the pitch, in line with the creases. A
large-screen TV near the scoreboard displays an image of the bat just as the
bails are knocked from the stumps, so everyone can see if the batsman got his
bat over the crease first.
