The British Medical Association is calling for changes in the law which would
allow surgeons to remove a dead person鈥檚 organs for transplant without prior
permission from the donor or their relatives. People not wishing to donate their
organs when they die would have to 鈥渙pt out鈥. Since Belgium introduced a similar
system in 1986 the number of organs available for transplant has doubled.
At present, willing donors must stipulate their intentions. Even then,
surviving relatives can veto their plans.
