The prospect of cloning organs perfectly matched to their recipients has
moved one step closer with the acquisition of the Scottish company Roslin
Biomed鈥攆ounded by the creators of Dolly the sheep鈥攂y Geron of Menlo
Park, California.
Geron has bankrolled work to isolate human embryonic stem cells, which have
the capacity to become any tissue in the body. By combining cloning technology
with the isolation of stem cells from resulting embryos, it may be possible to
grow tissue and organs from a patient鈥檚 own cells, overcoming problems of
rejection.
