Bovine somatotrophin, the hormone made by Monsanto to boost milk production
in cows, is too harmful to be licensed in Europe, say veterinary scientists
advising the European Union. 鈥淸BST] causes substantially and very significantly
poorer welfare because of increased foot disorders, mastitis, reproductive
disorders and other production related diseases,鈥 says their report.
Agriculture ministers from the 15 EU member states must decide soon whether
to lift a moratorium on BST that is in place until 2000. Canadian health
authorities banned BST on welfare grounds in January.
