Most British farm animals are tagged to provide an audit trail for their
meat. But some labels are lost at slaughter, according to Gregory Armitage and
Paul Gibson of Thirsk in Yorkshire. So they suggest tagging livestock internally
by feeding them a unique combination of 40 safe isotopes of 16 elements (GB 2
320 960). Armitage and Gibson say these labels can then be 鈥渞ead鈥 using nuclear
magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
