Robert Weisgerber of New York complains in W0 98/8140 that conventional
movies lack drama because they are shot and screened at 24 frames per second
(fps). A few features, such as Around the World in 80 Days and
Oklahoma, were shot at 30 fps and special event movies are now filmed at 60
fps. The higher speed gives smoother motion because there is no blur on
fast-moving objects. But the audience gets used to the glitzy effect, so
Weisgerber suggests using the effect intermittently, shooting movies partly at
24 fps and partly at 48 fps. In a film like Jurassic Park, most action
would be shot at 24 fps. But when the dinosaurs go on the rampage, switching to
48 fps would enhance the realistic effect.
