Sound engineers enhance the sound of stereo in concerts by shifting the phase
of the stereo loudspeakers. This makes the music sound wider. But the technique
鈥渨orks too well鈥, according to Q Sound Labs of Calgary in Alberta, the company
that helped develop the technology. If there is a central voice such as a
vocalist, the wider sound makes for a very fat lady.
Q Sound is now patenting (EP 779 764) a circuit that separates the central
voice from the rest of the sound, and leaves it untouched. The stereo music
still sounds wide鈥攂ut the voice remains realistic.
