AS parts of western Europe suffer the driest spring for 200 years, the
European Environment Agency is warning that the continent must stop taking its
traditionally abundant water resources for granted.
The EEA claims that 60 per cent of cities in the European Union with
populations greater than 100 000鈥攈ousing a total of 140 million
people鈥攍ive in areas where more water is removed from the ground than is
naturally replaced.
