THE director-general of the WHO, Hiroshi Nakajima, has said he will not
seek re-election next January. Until now, Nakajima had been expected to seek a
third term.
Under his leadership the UN agency has been criticised for failing to set
clear priorities. A growing number of countries鈥攊ncluding southern African
states and several industrialised countries鈥攁re thought to be backing Gro
Harlem Brundtland, Norway鈥檚 former prime minister, as the next
director-general.
