THE British Library may soon charge its readers an annual fee. The
library admits that, following November鈥檚 poor budget settlement, it is
re-examining the issue of charges. But it refuses to confirm reports that
readers may have to pay as much as 拢100 a year.
If fees are introduced, researchers using the library鈥檚 science reading rooms
may find that they have to pay twice. After paying their annual fee, they may
have to pay again to read articles in certain periodicals.
Last month the library decided to buy only one copy of many popular foreign
journals and to keep them in Boston Spa, Yorkshire, for the first six months
after publication.
