SPEED bumps can seriously damage your health, particularly if you are in
a bus.
In the latest issue of the Journal of Accident and Emergency
Medicine, David Bowrey at the Cardiff Royal Infirmary cites two cases where
women were flung from bus seats by a speed bump. One suffered a fractured spine,
the other needed a neck collar and is still in pain 15 months after the
accident.
鈥淚鈥檝e heard lots of anecdotal cases and I鈥檓 aware of car passengers suffering
serious injuries,鈥 says Bowrey. But bus passengers are particularly vulnerable
because buses have a long wheelbase, which causes a more violent jolt.

Speed bumps should not be put in bus lanes, Bowrey argues. Traffic planners
already follow this policy in the US, Australia and New Zealand.
