Tumour therapy

AMERICAN researchers are claiming dramatic results in treating Kaposi鈥檚
sarcoma, a cancer found in some AIDS patients. They used liposomes, spheres of
a fatty substance, to carry an anticancer drug, daunorubicin, into cells. The
liposomes target the cancer cells so fewer healthy cells are destroyed. Two-
thirds of patients鈥 tumours shrank.

The scientists, based at the California Cancer Medical Center in Los
Angeles, believe the liposome technology could help in treating cancers of the
lung, prostate and colon.
