TREKKING halfway across a continent for a look at the heavens will become a thing of the past from next month, when the world鈥檚 first fully remote controlled ground-based telescope becomes operational at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico.
Astronomers will be able to operate the 3.5-metre telescope by relaying commands and receiving data through the Internet. The project鈥檚 organisers say more astronomers will be able to observe the skies on any given night, with researchers from many different locations sharing the instrument.
