The four winners of a national drawing competition entitled 鈥楾oday鈥檚
Engineers鈥 were presented with their prizes by science minister William
Waldegrave at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London this week. The
competition was open to children aged 5 to 7 who were asked to draw a picture
of an engineer at work or something an engineer makes.
Some 8000 children entered the contest. Waldegrave praised the 鈥榬emarkable
understanding of engineering鈥 shown by the 50 finalists, who included Laura
Osborne, aged 7, of Largs, near Glasgow, with her picture of a yellow car
ferry. The overall winner was Sam Bowditch, aged 5, from Salisbury, who
was given 拢50 and a mystery flight for his drawing of an engineer
surrounded by aeroplanes, spacecraft and helicopters. His school was also
awarded 拢1000 to spend on technology equipment.
Eight British engineering organisations sponsored the competition, which
was part of the first National Week of Science, Engineering and Technology
in March.
