William McBride, the Australian obstetrician credited with blowing the
whistle on the dangers of thalidomide in 1962, has lost his appeal against
being struck off the medical register.
The New South Wales Court of Appeal upheld the state medical tribunal鈥檚
decision to remove McBride from the register because he was guilty of scientific
fraud. McBride has been unable to practise medicine since the tribunal鈥檚
ruling a year ago.
In February 1993 the tribunal concluded that McBride had deliberately
published false and misleading scientific reports and altered the results
of experiments. He was also found guilty of medical malpractice for leaving
a woman in labour so that he could catch a flight to Rome. The Court of
appeal ruled that 鈥榚ven now, the appellant lacks any real insight into the
gravity of what he has done鈥.
