As the Cold War ended, mapmakers around the world must have had an extra
cause for celebration – all those atlases in urgent need of revision. The
Gaia Atlas of Planet Management (Gaia*, pp 272, £16.99 pbk) is a
revision of 1984’s edition and, yes, those maps have been redrawn. It offers
a swift analysis of the world by summing up an area’s potential, the risks
it faces from, for example, pollution and ways to manage its sustainability,
and considers the role of people as planet managers.
