The Prosecutor General鈥檚 office in Moscow has dismissed the case against
Vil Mirzayanov, the scientist accused of revealing state secrets about Russia鈥檚
chemical weapons programme. The prosecutor decided last week that Mirzayanov
had not violated any articles of Russia鈥檚 new constitution.
Late in January, Mirzayanov was jailed for refusing to attend his own
trial, which he described as unconstitutional. After an international outcry,
the prosecutor ordered a new investigation into his case and, on 22 February,
Mirzayanov was released from prison. The new investigation has now been
dropped.
Mirzayanov says he is 鈥榰nspeakably happy鈥� and wishes to thank all the
scientific organisations round the world who petitioned the authorities
on his behalf. He has now been invited to appear before Russia鈥檚 parliamentary
foreign affairs committee on 24 March. The committee is considering Russia鈥檚
part in international agreements to destroy chemical weapons.
