Waste ‘is safe’

Nuclear wastes dumped in the Arctic seabed by the former Soviet Union
pose little environmental threat, because the radiation is spreading slowly,
if at all, from the original dump spots, say Pentagon scientists.

鈥業t鈥檚 getting bound into the bottom,鈥 says one scientist who reviewed
findings from a study funded by the US Navy鈥檚 Office of Naval Research.
鈥業t鈥檚 not moving very fast.鈥

Congress ordered the study last year, after Russian officials acknowledged
that the former Soviet Union had dumped 92 petabecquerels (92 x 10 15
becquerels) of radioactive waste in Arctic waters near the island of Novaya
Zemlya.
