The President of Ukraine, Leonid Kravchuk, will meet representatives
of Western governments in Vienna later this month to discuss what to do
with the nuclear power plant at Chernobyl. The International Atomic Energy
Agency asked for a meeting after it inspected the plant last month, and
found ‘numerous safety deficiencies’ in the two reactors that are still
operating.

The IAEA also found ‘accelerated deterioration’ in the sarcophagus enclosing
the reactor that exploded in 1986. It says that collapse of the sarcophagus
‘would have serious consequences’.
