sand, he would have been much comforted to have had Tim Corfield鈥檚 The Wilderness
Guardian (Longman Kenya, pp 701, 拢17 pbk) among his luggage. A compendium
of bush wisdom, it deals with all kinds of tricky situations that, off the
beaten track, can easily prove fatal 鈥� driving through sand, changing wheels
without a jack and first aid for snake bites.
But this is far more than a manual for emergencies. Aimed primarily
at men and women who work in Africa鈥檚 wild places, its chapters cover every-thing
from building bush camps (first, make your bricks) and harnessing wind,
water and solar power, to diagnosing animal diseases and creating antipoaching
squads.
