US President Bill Clinton has decided not to impose trade sanctions
on Norway, despite Norway鈥檚 resumption of commercial whaling this year.
US law allows the restriction of imports from countries that 鈥榰ndermine鈥
international conservation agreements such as the ban on commercial whaling.
But Clinton said he first wanted to try 鈥榞ood-faith efforts to convince
the Norwegians to follow agreed conservation measures鈥.
Norway immediately announced it would try to get US support for lifting
the whaling ban itself. Norwegian whalers killed 156 of the quota of 160
minke whales Norway set for itself this year.
