Letters: Whales are cuter

According to your story, 鈥楾he amphibious past of whales鈥 (Science, 20
March), 鈥榩rimitive whales were probably amphibians, as modern seals and
walruses are鈥. Amphibious these animals are; amphibians they most certainly
are not.

It鈥檚 a pity, really 鈥 if whales were amphibians, that much maligned
and oft ignored group might benefit from some of the huge amounts of public
sympathy (and money) available to cetacean conservation. The 鈥榗ute and cuddly鈥
brigade have a far greater fund raising appeal, as even the most dedicated
herptile fan must admit (though with some chagrin).
