One-third of women chemists in the US think that men have better opportunities
for promotion, judging from a survey of 2100 female chemists and 2100 male
chemists by the American Chemical Society. According to Joan Burrelli of
the ACS half the women thought their career progression was influenced by
the fact that they were women, not by their ability.

Half the women said they encountered discrimination favouring men. Burrelli
said that there was ‘some perception on the part of employees that women
with families will not be able to devote the time needed to do the job’.

The most obvious obstacle women met was the progression to management.
‘That’s either because women don’t prepare themselves for management or
don’t pursue it so hard, or there’s discrimination, but you can’t tell from
the survey,’ said Burrelli.
