Manufacture of PVC is the main source of dioxins in the environment,
according to a review of technical literature published by Greenpeace.
Although the amounts involved are tiny 鈥 one German plant manufacturing
vinyl chloride monomer, a raw material for PVC, emitted 8 grams of dioxins
a year 鈥 Greenpeace says if they were all ingested by humans, it could give
30 million people their entire 鈥榯olerable intake鈥, as laid down in international
guidelines.
Greenpeace is campaigning for the closure of all industries that continue
to produce wastes containing organochlorines, including dioxins.
