Philosophers, scientists, historians, writers and educationalists will
be debating the sometimes acrimonious relationship between science and
art at a weekend conference in Bristol, 27 to 28 February. Roy Porter of
the Wellcome Institute leads off with a lecture on 鈥楾he Two Cultures: A
Historical Perspective鈥, followed by Mary Midgley on 鈥楾ribal Wars鈥. Lewis
Wolpert lectures on 鈥楾he Unnatural Nature of Science鈥, his view that science
cannot be understood by applying commonsense. Other speakers look at science
and art in education, language and the public eye. To book a place at
鈥楢rt and Science: Two or Three Cultures?鈥, contact Interalia, 49 Bristol
Hill, Brislington, Bristol BS4 5AA. Tel: 0272 720704.
