Fifty industrial plants legally discharge up to 1723 billion tonnes
of pollution a year into Britain’s rivers and estuaries, according to Greenpeace.
The organisation accused the National Rivers Authority of implementing the
government’s ‘policy to pollute’.

The NRA said that it had made significant reductions in pollution over
the past three years. Lord Crickhowell, chairman of the NRA, said that Greenpeace
was peddling ‘grossly misleading rubbish’.
