Britain’s Medical Research Council this week hit out at the ‘lethal
cocktail of untruth and ignorance’ in media reports of an ‘alternative’
AIDS conference in Amsterdam promoting the idea that HIV does not cause
AIDS . Most of the reports referred to by the council quote Peter Duesberg
of the University of California at Berkeley, a long-time critic of mainstream
thinking on AIDS.

‘To suggest, as Duesberg does, that safer sex is useless in the fight
against AIDS is an irresponsibility bordering on the criminal,’ says a statement
last week by the council. ‘To publicise such suggestions is similarly irresponsible.’
