This calf is bedding down on shredded telephone directories. Ameritech
Publishing (API) of Troy in Michigan now runs schemes for recycling directories
in 48 communities throughout Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, the
states for which it publishes directories. So far, says the company, the
campaigns have recovered 5300 tonnes of directories, preserving more than
13 300 cubic metres of landfill space.
鈥楽tudies indicate that the bedding absorbs more and decomposes faster
than straw or sawdust,鈥 says Debbie Ciavattone, the recycling coordinator
at API. 鈥楢nd there鈥檚 less bacteria, little dust, no spores and no fly eggs.鈥
Soiled bedding biodegrades as fertiliser mulch.
