Serbian physicists this week implored the warring factions in Yugoslavia
not to shell chemical鈥檚 factories that could pose health and environmental
hazards if destroyed. In a communique released by the Institute of Physics
in Belgrade, members of the institute鈥檚 scientific council warn that a chemical鈥檚
plant at Tuzla in northeastern Bosnia which is already under mortar fire,
could trigger a catastrophe if huge stocks of chlorine at the site are released.
They also draw attention to chemicals plants around Belgrade which could
pose a threat to the 1 million people living nearby if damaged. 鈥楾he spread
of poisons over the whole region appears inevitable if these plants are
damaged or destroyed,鈥 says the communique.
