CFCs in store

Germany may be ahead of other countries in promoting the abolition of
CFCs but it is lagging behind its neighbours in disposing of the ozone-destroying
gases it already has stored away.

At least 600 tonnes of used CFCs are stored in Germany said environment
minister Klaus Topfer at a recent news conference. But a spokesman from
the same ministry, Franz-August Emden, said Germany has too few high-temperature
toxic waste incinerators which can safely destroy CFCs. Topfer blamed Germany鈥檚
state environment ministers for the lack of incinerators. 鈥楾hey won鈥檛 give
us licences to build or operate plants,鈥 he said.

At present the gases are being destroyed at the experimental TAMARA
plant in Karlsruhe, which can burn about a kilogram of CFCs a day.
