Politicians are questioning the wisdom of wiring up Parliament with
a computer network, following allegations by Labour MPs that they have had
discs stolen and their computer files broken into.
In these cases a thief would have had to physically enter the MPs鈥 offices.
If plans to link MPs, Lords and staff on a network go ahead, their data
could be just as vulnerable to hackers. Peter Hain, one of the victims of
the recent thefts, says 鈥業 would want some cast iron security鈥.
Plans for a network have been under discussion since 1983. A pilot scheme
is about to begin at the new parliamentary office at 7 Millbank. The Information
Select Committee hopes to have finance to wire the whole of Parliament by
1994.
