French nuclear plants should be monitored by committees that include
local residents, trade unionists, scientists and academics, says a report
by France鈥檚 Office for Science and Technology Assessment.
MP Claude Birraux, author of the report, argues that the committees
will provide the 鈥榦penness and democracy鈥 that is essential to ensure safety
in nuclear plants. But Birraux argues against allowing foreigners to sit
on committees when nuclear sites are close to other countries. Swiss nationals
have protested against alleged safety risks at French plants close to the
Swiss border.
