Rules to control the export of fossils and other rare natural items
from Britain were put back on the agenda last week by a panel commissioned
by the government to review the regulations on the export of 鈥榳orks of art鈥.
Despite being told not to consider natural items, the panel recommended
extending controls for works of art to fossils and other 鈥榳orks of nature鈥
that are a part of Britain鈥檚 heritage. The government, which had previously
ruled this out, says it will consider the recommendation along with the
rest of the report.
Items such as fossils could end up being ranked in order of importance
and listed as national treasures if one of the review鈥檚 proposals goes ahead.
