French insurance companies have rejected an appeal by the minister for
social affairs calling on them to pay compensation to haemophiliacs infected
with HIV.
Jean-Louis Bianco asked insurance firms, in the name of 鈥榥ational solidarity鈥,
to set up a 鈥榬apid, complete and fair鈥 compensation scheme for haemophiliacs
treated in the early 1980s with clotting factor contaminated with HIV.
The national insurance federation refused, saying that money cannot
be handed out for risks not covered by contract.

The French haemophiliacs鈥 association condemned Bianco鈥檚 appeal and
demanded immediate legislation to introduce compensation.
