An emergency on 22 July forced British Telecom to shut down a telephone
exchange in North London, cutting off 22 000 subscribers and leaving them
without 999 cover for more than an hour.
After 10 days, BT had still not volunteered an explanation, let alone
an apology. The incident occurred four days after the company鈥檚 chairman
Iain Vallance promised subscribers: 鈥楾he best customer service in the world.鈥�
