Britian鈥檚 shortage of physics teachers could double by the year 2000,
partly because physicists shy away from other people, according to Alan
Smithers, a researcher at the University of Manchester.
鈥楾eaching essentially provides people-oriented satisfactions, which
are often not very important to physicists who seem to be drawn to their
subject by an impersonal love of order and pattern,鈥 he says in the latest
issue of Physics World.
A shortage of suitable teachers contributes to bad science teaching
in a quarter of primary schools, school inspectors said in a report this
week. In one school the inspectors visited, only half the science lessons
were taken by qualified staff.
